From the main thread:

re: #19 Khal Wimpo (the extinguisher of tiki torches)

I grew up raising Beef on a farm in Eau Claire County.

They’ve been voting Republican for decades. They don’t give a shit about anything but money for them a (diary price supports, etc) and cutting taxes (and programs) for everyone else. They chose to continue to vote Republican even as the FitzWalker regime gutted the state and continue to vote Republican for a racist & economically incompetent pig because they spend all day listening to Fox and Rush in their tractors and barns so they “know” Killery hates America and couldn’t run the Government.

Many of them are decent people and, no, not all of them vote GOP like that. My uncle was a Democratic voting dairy farmer but when his daughter married a black man the hate came out and I guarantee there was much more of that driving the GOP success than there was actual Economic thought involved.

They made their beds. Let them fucking lie in it as they enjoy their minimum wage hell they helped us stay in.

Not trying to sound sarcastic, genuinely wondering.
You said specifically in your comment about this that the Wisconsin farmers voted out of rural resentment “as Hilary and the Democrats obviously didn’t give a shit about them.”

Yes, it is necessary and obvious that Democratic candidates at the local and preferably also the national level need to campaign in these areas. What message and policy proposals do you think can get through the fog of Fox-rage? Are the people you know desperate enough to think about a different choice this year?

We’re not going to sacrifice the concerns of urban Americans to woo rural voters; we can pursue strategies that help both. What message will they hear as “we hear you and we will try to enact policy to help you” if it doesn’t also say “you’re the real Americans and you deserve to come first”? (Not that they ever DO come first in Republican policy vs their rhetoric…)

From the main thread:

Ouch. Yeah, I have moments when I descend into rage at the rural friends & family in Wisconsin who have voted to punish others, rather than to help all. I’ve had my share of raised voices over what exactly “getting free stuff” means - AFDC payments vs. subsidized crop insurance is a favorite talking point.

Sorry to hear about your uncle. I’ve seen first-hand with my nieces and nephews (from a mixed-race family) how the last few years have really brought the ugliness in America’s soul out into the light.
